A sports clubhouse goes digital – and immediately saves energy and costs

A sports club in Hesse has demonstrated just how simple and effective the digitalisation of an existing building can be.

The sports club building dates back to the 1960s and its energy efficiency is something many clubs are familiar with: old building structure, poor insulation, high consumption. This very combination made the building the ideal candidate for the Sensise solution – high potential, low complexity, fast results.


Perfect starting point for Sensise


The sports club building has approximately 300 m² of usable space and – typical for a building of this age – had an energy consumption of approximately 270 kWh per square meter . This clearly places it in energy efficiency class H , the lowest category with the highest realistic potential for savings.

For Sensise, this was a near-perfect situation:

  • clear consumption patterns,

  • no complicated building technology,

  • large optimization reserves,

  • Very quick implementation.


Implementation in record time: Completely digital – in just 2 weeks


The club decided to fully digitize its clubhouse. The following systems were used:

  • 15 intelligent heating actuators

  • 1 Gateway for secure networking

  • Sensise software for automated heating optimization

  • Indoor climate sensors for continuous monitoring of temperature, humidity and occupancy

  • Energy monitoring sensors for gas, water and electricity – all connected via LoRaWAN interfaces


This gave the club a complete, centrally controlled solution for heating control, room climate monitoring and energy analysis – without any renovations or interventions in the building technology.


The entire project – from the initial site visit to fully automated control – was completed within two weeks. For ongoing sports operations, this meant: no interruptions, no construction work, no complexity .


Result: Immediately noticeable savings


After activation, the system automatically began to optimize heating times, room temperatures and usage patterns.

This saves the club around €1,700 annually – without any loss of comfort and without any additional effort.


Financial benefits and ROI


Due to the high optimization potential and the moderate investment, the project pays for itself extremely quickly:

  • Annual savings: approx. €1,700

  • ROI: after 1.6 years

  • Savings after 5 years: approximately €3,400

  • Savings after 10 years: approximately €8,500

This clearly shows that the older and more inefficient a building is, the more digitalization pays off.


CO₂ benefit included


With decreasing energy consumption, the building's CO₂ emissions are automatically reduced – by several tons every year. Over ten years, this corresponds to the carbon sequestration capacity of over 2,500 planted trees .


Conclusion: A flagship project for clubs and municipalities


This example shows how quick, economical and effective digital heating optimization can be – especially in older existing buildings where classic renovation measures are expensive or difficult to implement.


The sports club now saves money, energy and CO₂ – thanks to a solution that was implemented in just two weeks, creates comprehensive transparency and delivers immediate results.
